Market Strength Index (MSI)

Introduction

The Market Strength Index (MSI) is a forex indicator used to gauge the strength of a currency pair's price movements over a specific period. Similar to other momentum indicators like the Relative Strength Index (RSI) or Stochastic Oscillator, the MSI helps traders identify potential trends and reversals in the market.

Calculation

  1. Typical Price Calculation: Calculate the typical price for each period. The typical price is the average of the high, low, and closing prices.
  2. Percentage Change Calculation: Determine the percentage change of the typical price from the previous period. This is done by taking the difference between the current typical price and the previous typical price, then dividing by the previous typical price.
  3. Smoothing Function: Apply a smoothing function to the percentage change. This can be a simple moving average or exponential moving average over a specified number of periods.
  4. Result: The resulting value is the Market Strength Index (MSI).

Interpretation

  • Bullish Momentum: MSI values above zero indicate bullish momentum, suggesting that buyers are in control.
  • Bearish Momentum: MSI values below zero suggest bearish momentum, indicating that sellers are in control.

Interpretation

Calculation

The Williams %R is calculated using the following formula: Williams %R = ((Highest High - Close) / (Highest High - Lowest Low)) * -100 Where:

  • Highest High is the highest high price over a specified period.
  • Lowest Low is the lowest low price over the same period.
  • Close is the closing price of the current period.

Interpretation
